Ever since she was a little girl, she has absolutely adored being adored by her parents and relatives and neighbors, but her parents especially. It helps that she is an attractive girl who always goes out of her way to be excessively polite to adults. She is also quite smart, and has made honor roll every semester. However, her straight A’s are not always simple to obtain, especially in the areas of math and science. Her academic strengths lie in her ability to create concise, polished essays. This skill at arguing well has made her a valuable member of the high school debate team. She comes off as a bit of an overachiever, but her dream has always been to attend an Ivy League school like her parents did, and whatever will help her get there is worth doing. She has also been aware of who she once was since a fairly young age, and she attributes some of her need to be good at everything to the undeniably strong personality of her past life self. That isn’t of course to say that she has no personality of her own. Unlike her past life self, she is usually quite nice and friendly, and kind, to those who she truly loves and trusts, especially her family, her three best friends, and occasionally her boyfriend Jake. Once you gain her trust, you are fairly certain to have it forever, and Madison Taylor is nothing if not a loyal friend. However, she does occasionally come across as a bit full of herself, but mostly she is just genuinely proud of all of her achievements, and is not ashamed to brag about them, especially ones she has worked hard for. She also, of course, is like any teenaged girl who loves to hang out with her friends, make out with her boyfriend between classes, go to parties, play sports, and have fun. She lived on her family’s plantation, Tara, in Clayton County in up-country Georgia in real comfort until the outbreak of the Civil War. Until the war, she had spent most of her time being the belle of the County and having as many beaux as possible. She thought life would go on simply and happily forever. And though she had many beaux, there was one man she always wanted above all others, and that was the honorable Ashley Wilkes. However, at a barbecue at Twelve Oaks, the Wilkes plantation, the April she was sixteen, he announced his engagement to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. On this same day, she professed her undying love for him, and moments after, met Rhett Butler, who had overheard. And war was also officially declared that day. In an effort to get back at the Hamilton family and also cover the hurt she felt by hurting others, she accepted Charles Hamilton’s proposal of marriage, though it had been a well-known fact that he would eventually marry Honey Wilkes. Charles had barely been away at war two months when he died in training camp. After he died, she realized she was pregnant with his child. She had moved to Atlanta to live with Melanie at Aunt Pittypat’s, since she was Melanie’s sister-in-law. She hated mourning, and wished she could be out, and her first moment of public scandal was when Rhett Butler bid on her to dance a reel at a bazaar being held to raise money for the Confederate troops. After that, she started to slowly make her way back into social life, even though most people felt it was too soon to be appropriate. The war got worse, and she and Melanie spent most of their time working at the hospital with Dr. Meade. However, Melanie was pregnant, and her baby was born on the same day that Atlanta fell to the Yankees and Sherman, and they fled to Tara with the help of Rhett (who left them when they were at Rough and Ready, halfway there, to go against all his former principles and join the army, and kissed Scarlett dramatically goodbye). All the plantations around were in ruins, but Tara still stood, though Scarlett’s mother had died from typhoid and her sisters were sick with it, and her father had lost his mind (and eventually died a couple years later). She brought Tara back from nothing, suffering through terrible starvation and having to do hard manual labor, which she had never done in her life, and basically becoming the head of the household. Many soldiers passed through as the war came to a close, and twice Tara was threatened by Yankee soldiers – one whom Scarlett shot and killed herself, getting quite a bit of money from the wallet she took off of him. One person who came and was a true help to them, after they nursed him back to full health, was Will Benteen. Normally she would not have lowered herself to someone of his class, but he was a great help to the family and to Tara. Eventually Ashley came home, and shortly after that, the Carpetbaggers had started to take over and asked for a huge amount of taxes on Tara. Scarlett got the money by marrying Frank Kennedy (after a failed attempt at getting it from the always rich Rhett), who had always loved and intended to marry her sister, Suellen. She ended up staying in Atlanta with him, and sent the money back to Tara. Scarlett started her downfall as an upstanding member of good society when she bought her own lumber mills and proved that she was a good businesswoman at a time when women should be demure and stay at home. But life in Atlanta during Reconstruction was dangerous for native Georgians, and one night, while she was out riding alone, she was assaulted by two men in a shady part of town. In retaliation, Frank, Ashley and other men in the community (who were members of the KKK), went after the two men to kill them. But since the Yankees would arrest and most likely kill them for doing that, Rhett helped them with a good alibi, but Frank was killed. On the evening after his funeral, Rhett, who had always had a close friendship with Scarlett, proposed to her, and she accepted. Thus began her very extravagant life, and she rose in society, but not in good society. Eventually she gave birth to Bonnie, Rhett’s daughter, who he treasured more than life itself, and he got back in good standing in nice society because of it, while Scarlett was still pretty much an outcast. Only the protection and love from Melanie made it possible for her to survive socially. She and Rhett had begun to fall out with each other, especially after a misunderstanding about Ashley which the whole town knew about. When Bonnie died at age four in a riding accident, they weren’t able to reconcile their differences. And when Melanie died within the next year, Scarlett finally realized that she had never loved Ashley, only her idea of him, and also realized that she really did love Rhett, and had for years, and she ran home to tell him the news. But he had given up trying to love her, and left her, and she decided to return to Tara – the one constant in her life which had given her strength in the end of the war and could give her strength again. She was the kind of person who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted, and usually assumed the ends would eventually justify the means.
